The future is now in Manzanita. We can’t call our growing city a village. We can’t insulate from growth. We need to vote for individuals who can steward balanced, careful and strategic growth. That’s why I support voting for Mike Scott, Mayor, Thomas Aschenbrener, Councilor and Hans Tonjes, Counselor.
The world is happening around us, out of our direct control. Climate change adversely impacts us now. From the 2016 tornado to the 2020 fires and Covid-19, we no longer remain in a unique bubble geographically or intellectually. How we plan, prepare and address our city government matters. We can’t manage our city as we did 30 years ago, and we can’t save our way to success by cutting jobs, working out of temporary quarters and micromanaging timecards. Building infrastructure, safety and resilience into our city is essential to its long-term sustainability, and livability.
Population shifts, travel limitations, work-from-home are happening now. We can’t put up imaginary gates, post keep-out signs or shut down rentals. The Sharing Economy has transformed vacation destinations all over the US. We can’t stop that movement, but we can manage, balance, evaluate and adjust how we handle STRs and coexist successfully.
We need to support our incumbent leaders running for reelection. They’re seeking to balance quality of life, support small businesses, protect public health and safety, and support community services.
We occupy the planet together. We succeed together; part-timers, full-timers, renters, owners, neighbors and visitors. We must elect leaders that help us plan for change.
