Fourteen years later, thanks to the support and backing of the community, 60 children between the ages of four and 10 were able to participate in this year’s Shop with a Cop.
Paired up one-on-one with an officer, children were able to shop the aisles of Fred Meyer with an impressive $125 gift budget.
Shop with a Cop originally started in 1978 by Georgia Schreiner and a police officer in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was designed to give children who have experienced a negative contract with law enforcement an opportunity to purchase Christmas gifts for themselves or family members. Negative contact can include being removed from their home, a death investigation, and other unpleasant contacts.
To date, Tillamook Shop with a Cop has served over 750 children, with all funds in the program raised as donations.
This year’s participating law enforcement officers represented Tillamook Police, Rockaway Beach Police, Manzanita Police, Tillamook County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police, and the US Coast Guard Station Tillamook Bay.
