Susan “Suzy” Jane Berns (Dougher)

On Tuesday, October 30, 2018 Susan “Suzy” Jane Berns (Dougher), passed away from lung cancer while surrounded by her loving family at the age of 67.

Suzy was born on January 19, 1951 in Heidelberg, Germany to Captain USN Max and Ginny Berns. She graduated from Granby High School in Norfolk, VA and received a degree in Education from Old Dominion University.

On April 17, 1976, Suzy married John Edward Dougher and they raised three children, Jeff, Lauren, and Allison. Through her love of music, costume, and dance, she was an active member of the Mardi Gras Krewe of Nereids in the greater New Orleans area and continued celebrate the Mardi Gras traditions with her friends in the Pacific Northwest. She moved from Bay St. Louis, MS to the Pacific Northwest in 1986 and became a Vancouver, WA resident in 1990.

Suzy was a passionate 8th grade teacher at Pleasant Valley Middle School, and during that time she received Star Teacher and Teacher of the Year awards nominated by students and faculty. She was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church and a lay reader in the Episcopal Church. While living in Vancouver, WA Susan was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church and a lay reader in the Episcopal Church. In 2007 she become a massage therapist, moved to Manzanita, OR, then later worked as a massage therapist for Spa Manzanita. She impacted many lives through her spiritual gifts, emphatic heart, and her ability to befriend those of all walks of life. She will be greatly missed.

Suzy is survived by her three children, Jeff, Lauren, and Allison; four young grandchildren, Daniel (4), Eleni(3), Lincoln(1), and Stefos(6 months); sisters Judy Berns and Barbara Dunbar; and brother Tom Berns.

The memorial service will be on Friday, November 16, 2018 at 3pm, at All Saints Episcopal Church in Vancouver, WA at 2206 NW 99th St, Vancouver, WA 98665. Donations in Suzy’s name can be made to the any Humane Society as she showed a love of rescuing animals throughout her life.
