NKN Pirates – win some, lose some

Neah-Kah-Nie started off the girls basketball season Tuesday with a 33-16 road win over Waldport.

The team will be looking for its second win of the season when it hosts Warrenton’s Lady Warriors tonight (Dec. 9).

The 3A Lady Warriors will be bringing a 2-1 record, which may improve since they will travel to Knappa tonight for another non-league battle.

Warrenton opened its season last Friday with an 83-6 rout of the Lady Irish. A day later, Warrenton dropped a 63-55 decision to the 4A Junction City Lady Tigers, falling to 1-1 for the season.

The Lady Warriors picked up their second win of the season when the 3A school hammered smaller Naselle in a short road trip into western Washington by a 52-29 margin.

The Pirates will host Delphian Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the team’s Northwest League opener, followed by a battle against City Christian next Thursday at 6 p.m.

The Pirates will close out their four-game homestand when they play Vernonia Dec. 17 at 2:30 p.m.

The team will have a little bit of a Christmas break when they wait for 10 days before traveling to Jewell for a non-league game at 2:30 p.m.

NKN Boys basketball

The Pirates ran afoul of the Waldport Irish Tuesday, opening with a 62-33 loss on the road.

It was the second loss in a row for the team from Rockaway Beach after dropping its opener last Friday to Portland Christian by a 58-32 margin.

The Warrenton Warriors (2-1) will be taking a short road trip to Knappa Thursday, then heads to Rockaway Beach Friday for a 7:30 contest with the Pirates.

Warrenton, a 3A school, opened their season last week with a 46-34 victory over Waldport, then dropped a 50-38 decision to Ilwaco in a cross-river battle Saturday. The Warriors traveled to Washington Tuesday to log a 50-38 victory at Naselle.

The Pirates will open the Northwest League season Tuesday when they host Delphian at 7:30 p.m. The team will finish off a four-game home stand with City Christian arriving Dec. 15 and Vernonia coming to the beach at 4 p.m. Dec. 17 (Saturday).

The Pirates will close out its 2016 portion of the season Dec. 21 when they play Gervais at the Toledo Beach Bach in a 1 p.m. game.
