Ann Powers, a veteran journalist, joins the North Coast Citizen as managing editor and will also be reporting for the Headlight Herald.
She brings 20-plus years of seasoned and well-rounded experience to the newspapers in journalism, public relations and governmental affairs.
“I’m excited to have Ann on our staff of journalists, she brings good experience to our news team,” Publisher Joe Warren said. “Ann specializes in, in-depth reporting, features and writing news stories, which will help progress both our Tillamook County publications and all of our special sections.”
Previously, Powers was a staff writer and photographer for Feather Publishing, located in the Sierra-Nevada basin of northern California. She’s also worked in New Mexico reporting for both TV and print news, and in Santa Fe as former Gov. Bill Richardson’s media coordinator.
Born and raised in Wisconsin, she is a University of Wisconsin-Madison graduate where she started her journalism career writing for the Daily Cardinal student newspaper, was the student stringer for the Wisconsin State Journal, and one of the original writers for The Onion, launched while she was there.
“I love everything Badgers and will forever be a proud Cardinalista,” Powers said of her college years. “I also love everything Wisconsin including the Packers, squeaky-cheese curds and water. Oregon has two of those three – so I feel pretty much at home.”
In addition, Powers has worked as a professional news producer, editor and reporter in Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota and Illinois. At times, she’s also done public relations and marketing gigs – but said she prefers the news world.
“News is where it’s at,” she said. “I’ve tried other industries — but always come home to news.”
