The Pirates ended their regular season with a threegame sweep of Gaston that put the team atop the Northwest League baseball standings with a 13-5 record.
Neah-Kah-Nie’s next scheduled opponent, Delphian, has already forfeited its three games with the Pirates as well as the rest of its schedule. Vernonia is second with a 12-3 record, while defending state champion Knappa is third with an 11-1 record. After a week of nonleague games with Clatskanie, Vernonia will start a final week battle with Knappa May 10 on the road. However, Knappa still has three league games with Faith Bible this week to help overtake the Pirates in the standings. A three-game sweep of the Falcons would move the Loggers ahead of the Pirates in the standings and set the stage for the final-week showdown with Vernonia. The Pirates started the week with a 5-0 win over Gaston April 26 in Rockaway Beach, then finished the sweep with a doubleheader in Gaston Friday. The Pirates took the first game by a narrow 1-0 score, then followed with a 12-3 victory.
