Artist Terri Shepflin likes to share her work with others, so she makes original watercolor paintings then makes multitudes of card prints.

“So more people can enjoy my art, and I can share it with more than one person,” explains Shepflin. A retired teacher, Shepflin has been painting for years, and on July 5th of this year she opened the little gift store with a lot of personality, Lotus Petaler in Wheeler. “I’m not a retailer, and I sell my cards and other things that I like, and that I think others will enjoy, too,” said Shepflin.
In addition to her trademark cards, the store includes a variety of vintage furniture that Shepflin acquires from estate sales. “Some of the furniture is in a sad state, and I fix them up, restore them to like new conditions, and then I do research about the pieces to get to know the pieces,” she continued. From early 1900’s chairs to storage cabinets and more, the Lotus Petaler features many antique pieces that have been lovingly brought back to life by Shepflin.
Lotus Petaler also features local artists’ work, and currently several of Kathy J. Pennington’s glass mosaics are available. “She was one of my first customers, and was thrilled to be able to sell her pieces here,” enthused Shepflin. “Her pieces are all about re-use and repurpose themes that I embrace, too.” Her latest project are wooden stars fashioned from reclaimed wooden slate spacers used in shipping containers.
“It’s so gratifying to experience the reaction when people come into the store and admire my cards, and ask “Who’s the artist?” and I say “Me” and they are so supportive,” said Shepflin. Her cards are also sold at Farmhouse Funk in Astoria for several years. The Lotus Petaler features an eclectic mix of art, vintage antiques, cards, candles, floats and seastars and more. “Things that I like,” said Shepflin. “Like this great metal numbers, aren’t they cool?” The Archipelago Botantical candles fill a room with wonderful scent and last.
