Over 300 Participants in 25th Manzanita Run/Walk

Portland runners claimed the top spots in the Manzanita Beach Walk & Run races Saturday.

Two took the top spots in the shorter 5K race, while the top three places in the 6.2-mile race along the beach went to visitors from the Rose City.

Art Avitia beat fellow Portlander Brock Roberts in the 5-kilometer race, completing the race in 19:42. Roberts finished more than a minute back in 20:58.

Nehalem’s Max Halverson was the first local finisher for the 3.1-mile race in a time of 24:59. There were 130 runners in the 5K race.

The first Manzanita runner to complete the race was 12-year old Ethan Lee with a time of 29:26 in 29th place , while Nehalem’s Ken Lund came in 37th place with a time 31:02.  Kalli Swanson of Nehalem finished four places behind Lund with a time 32:18 but beat out Garibaldi’s Jeff Wong (42nd, 32:20) by less than two seconds.

Seventy-one year old Richard Streedain of Manzanita came in 49 th place with a time 33:55.

Brent Anderson of Nehalem placed 57th in 34:34:47,  beating Nehalem’s Bill Harshberger (61st, 35:14), while Jordan White of Nehalem was 73rd in 37:15. Ten-year old Rachel Lee of Manzanita came in 77th overall with a time of 38:26, while two Nehalem runners, Steve Miller and David Troutman finished 79th and 80th, with times of 38:59 and 39:10 for the 5K race. Roger Crosta of Manzanita ran 39:25 to cross the finish line in 82nd place.

Garibaldi’s Donald Roddy was 92nd in 41:11, finishing seven seconds ahead of Nehalem’s Bryon Janich.

Nehalem’s Pamela Martin placed 100 th with a time of 42:00,  followed by Sally Neahring (102, 42:15), Susan Reinhardt (103, 43:06) and Colleen Riggs (104, 43:10). Kris Troutman finished in 43:30 (108th)., while Paulla Dacklin of Manzanita took 122nd place with a 57:38 time.

Heal wins 10K

In the 10-kilometer race Saturday, it was Ryan Heal beating Jon Mathiesen to the finish line  by 19 seconds to win in 40:19.

Sarah Roberts of Portland was the first woman to finish, placing third overall, while clocking in at 44:19 – one minute behind the overall winner.

There were 74 competitors that finished the 6.1-mile race.

Thomas Campbell of Manzanita was the first local finisher (36th, 1:00:09), beating Nehalem’s Willie Davidson to the line (37th, 1:00:27).

Sarah Zwissler of Nehalem placed 42nd in 1:01:35, beating out Christine Calkins of Manzanita by almost a minute. Carla Mcgillivray of Rockaway Beach was the next runner to finish (44th, 1:02:37).
