LOWER NEHALEM WATERSHED COUNCIL SPEAKER SERIES: Ocean Acidification

Ocean acidification is a global challenge to the sustainability of marine ecosystems. It is a major water quality issue linked to the reduction of shell material in our coastal waters and the mortality of shell forming marine life worldwide. Oregon has emerged as ground zero for ocean acidification science, policy making and actions. Join Lower Nehalem Watershed Council and co-host, Friends of Cape Falcon Marine Reserve, in welcoming Dr. Francis Chan for a presentation on this important issue. Chan will share about the evolving understanding of the geography of ocean acidification and ecological vulnerability. His presentation will also discuss the role of marine reserves and the local community in advancing the states understanding of ocean acidification impacts within our coastal waters as well as policy efforts and actions that are underway to address the challenges ahead.

The presentation will be held on Thursday, May 11, at the Pine Grove Community House (225 Laneda Ave) in Manzanita. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for refreshments. The presentation will start at 7:20 p.m. following an update from Lower Nehalem Watershed Council at 7:00 p.m.

Dr. Francis Chan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Integrative Biology at Oregon State University.  Dr. Chan received his PhD in ecology from Cornell University. Dr. Chan’s research is focused on understanding the ecosystem dynamics of coastal oceans.  He has worked extensively on the causes and consequences of low-oxygen (hypoxia) zones along the U. S. West Coast.  Dr. Chan is also working actively to understand the progression of ocean acidification in coastal waters and their implications for productive coastal oceans. He is a co-principle investigator in the Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans (PISCO) and recently served as the co-chair of the West Coast Ocean Acidification and Hypoxia Science Panel. Dr. Chan lives in Eugene, Oregon.

This event is part of the Lower Nehalem Watershed Council’s regular Speaker Series. Join us at the Pine Grove Community House each 2nd Thursday in January – May, October and November for natural resource focused presentations. Some of the featured topics for 2017 include salmon recovery, watershed health and ocean acidification.
