Nestucca, NKN girls race into state meet

Nestucca will be sending its girls team to the state championship meet in Eugene after winning the District 3 title Thursday at Bush Park in Salem.

The team can thank the fourth and fifth runners for the title and the berth in Eugene Nov. 5 at Lane Community College.The Lady Cats finished with 63 points, beating out rival Neah-Kah-Nie (83 points). Both teams will be going to the state meet.

East Linn Christian’s Sydney Nichol won the individual district title easily, with her 19:05.5 effort being almost a minute faster than the second place finisher (Jessica Neal of Central Linn).

Neah-Kah-Nie freshman Karissa Hadermann finished third in 20:57.2, just one second behind the second place finisher.Sophomore Rachel Whittles led Nestucca with a fourth-place finish (21:08.7), beating out NKN freshman Aspen Becker (fifth, 21:44.0).

Payton Hopkins (ninth, 22:26.9) and Tea Chatelain (11th, 22:41.7) gave the Lady Cats three finishers among the top 11 runners in the district championships.
Lacoya Remy-Hamer gave the Lady Pirates a 12th place finish (23:03.6),
Neah-Kah-Nia still led after the top three runners had finished for both teams, but Nestucca’s fourth and fifth runners pulled out the win for the Lady Cats by placing among the top 25 runners – about 10 places ahead the fourth and fifth Pirate runners.

It was sophomore Jessica Bailey (23rd, 24:07.5) and Jaykayla Jackson (24th, 24:08.2) that gave the Lady Cats the district title. Roan Childress (34th, 24:37.0) and Montana Ruona (37th, 25:08.5) closed out the Neah-Kah-Nie scoring.

Becca Ziegler (41st, 25:48.1) was the final Nestucca runner to finish.
Neah-Kah-Nie’s Nula Reid (53rd, 26:46.6) and Kayla Naylor (62nd, 28:37.8) closed out the Pirates’ efforts.
