During the recent and unexpected closure, annual fall maintenance and cleaning was also completed so there will not be a closure in September.  “We are always crossing our fingers when something happens with the equipment,” said long-time pool director Barbara McCann.  “When you are dealing with a pool that was built in 1930.”
There was some “mystery” surrounding the sudden pool closure, and concern about publicizing the possible re-open date.  “We simply didn’t know how long the repair would take, once the parts arrived,” said McCann.  “When the boiler went down, quick thinking from our diligent pool staff, Nancy Smith, in particular, kept further damage from happening,” explained McCann.   Once the problem was diagnosed as the heating tubes – 27 needing replacement and specialized welding work, the parts ordered and scheduled to arrive August 18th.   The repair was completed on Thursday August 20th.  Several adjustments had to be made over the weekend and the pool was literally monitored round the clock to be able to open Monday, August 24 at 6 am.  “With the age of the pool, it takes a major effort to keep it running,” added McCann.  “It was impossible to know for sure if the pool would open on Monday until mid-day on Sunday.  We apologize for this inconvenience.”
The pool will be on summer schedule through September 6th, and closed on Labor Day, Monday September 7th.   “We will not be closing for fall maintenance,” said McCann. “We took advantage of the down time and got the work done while waiting for the boiler repair.”  There will be a transition week for the pool schedule: Tuesday September 8 through Friday September 11 there will not be any classes.  The schedule will include:  Early bird lap swim, 6 a.m. to 8 a.m.; Water walking, 11 a.m. to Noon; Noon lap swim, noon to 1 p.m.; Water walking/Lap Swim, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and on Wednesday, Family swim from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
On Saturday, September 12th, the Aquatics Fitness classes will resume.  “We will be on a pre-fall schedule which will make up for some of the time missed in August,” explained McCann.
Fall term classes will begin on schedule on Monday, September 21st.  For complete schedule information, fall classes and more, go to www.ncrd.org or call 503-368-7121.
