Local Kiwanis Club folds

The Kiwanis Club of Manza-Whee-Lem, the north Tillamook County chapter of the international service organization, has ceased operations and disbanded.
Formed in 1991, the club’s members performed community projects and raised funds for children’s activities in its area.
Often seen in their blue and yellow vests, Kiwanians conducted raffles, bingo nights, the Tour of Homes, and Manzanita’s annual Easter egg hunt. They also solicited money to provide scholarships for graduating high school seniors.
“The club was unable to grow its membership, and we became too small to conduct programs efficiently,” said club president David Dillon. “It has been gratifying throughout the years to see the public respond whenever we asked for donations. People knew their money would go to good local causes – kids – so they gave.”
Kiwanian Mary Brophy said, “I will miss the camaraderie with all.” Kiwanian Lori Dillon said, “I am going to miss the kids that we have met along the way. Reading kindergarten books to classes, having kids’ groups come to our meetings, attending assemblies and graduations where Kiwanis has given out scholarships.  I still intend to help kids groups when and where I can.”
